Return on Investment (ROI)

There has been little published research carried out in New Zealand on the return on investment of workplace health programmes. Much of our evidence is from programmes in the United States where the ROI can vary between a return of between US$3.00 - $9.00 for every US$1.00 spent. Even if the lower figure of $3.00/$1.00 spent is used in New Zealand, this is still of considerable benefit to workplaces.

There are several reasons employees can be absent from work: stress, illness, family, so-called "sickies", and for personal reasons.

How can a workplace health programme impact on absenteeism?

It can:-

  • help with stress management
  • help manage some types of illnesses
  • change peoples' attitude to "sickies" because morale may improve

One of the most overlooked aspects of a workplace health programme is its ability to improve employee morale. There is little published research on this topic also, but feedback from Heartbeat Challenge companies when applying for their awards indicates employees feel better about their workplace. Improved morale and when employees are shown to be needed and appreciated can also reduce absenteeism as people will want to be at work. When morale declines, absenteeism often increases and productivity drops.

Presenteeism can also be a major cost to the workplace.  Presenteeism is when employees can be at  work, but because of time wasting, lack of concentration, lack of sleep, health issues etc, they may not be working at all. A workplace health programme can help with some of these issues but  there is really no workplace wellness programme that reduces the amount of time employees spend surfing the web. The estimated costs for presenteeism are similar and additional to, the cost of absenteeism.

The WellSteps ROI calculator can instantly tell you how much your workplace  is spending on some of these costs.
